Where to Eat in Gunnison: Local Favorites

Gunnison may be a small town, but it has a solid mix of places to eat, drink, and unwind. The food scene here is practical, locally rooted, and shaped by the pace of mountain life. You’ll find everything from quick post-adventure meals to slower sit-down dinners, often without the crowds or long waits you’d expect in larger resort towns.

This guide is a curated list of our local favorites. It’s not meant to be an exhaustive directory, but a helpful starting point for visitors who want to eat well while they’re here. The places below are ones people return to again and again and more personally, they’re our favorite spots in town. I’ll work up a resource for restaurants in Crested Butte in a later post but for now we’re sticking with our favorites in Gunnison. Whether that’s for coffee in the morning, an easy lunch between activities, takeout on a quiet night in, or a relaxed dinner out.

A quick note before you dive in. Hours, menus, and patio availability can be seasonal in Gunnison. Some spots close earlier than expected, especially outside of summer and ski season. Checking hours ahead of time and staying flexible will go a long way.

☕ Coffee & Breakfast

Whether you’re heading out early for a full day outside or easing into a slower morning, these spots are good places to start.

W Café
A classic local diner with a true mountain-town feel. W Café serves hearty all-day breakfast along with simple lunch favorites. Expect omelets, pancakes, and breakfast skillets that are filling and familiar. Breakfast at the W is quintessential Gunnison and just know that on the weekends, if you don’t get there early, you’re likely to have a little bit of a wait. But that kinda of feeds into a bit of the charm of the place. It’s a no frills vibe and been around forever.

Tributary Coffee Roasters
Right next door to the W is Tributary. Let’s just say, these guys know how to make a cup of coffee. They roast the beans right in house on a gorgeous machine in the front window, their baristas truly know how to make coffee right and you can really taste it. It’s a great spot where coffee is taken seriously. You can also pick up a yummy pastry of breakfast burrito while you’re there. (Or - if you’re extra bougie like Frank - pick up a coffee from Tributary while you wait for breakfast at The W! It’s the best of both worlds.) A good choice for quality coffee and a slower start to the day.

🥪 Casual Lunch & Easy Meals

These are the places people often reach for after a morning outside, on travel days, or when they want something satisfying without a long sit-down meal. (Check down the list for good Patio Spots too as most of those fit the bill for easy, casual meals too!)

Mario’s Pizza & Pasta
I’m just going to say it, this is my favorite lunch spot in town. Mario’s has been a Gunnison staple for as long as I can remember… and I first started visiting Gunnison as a small child! The interior is super charming (and hasn’t changed much in all these years, which is part of the charm, in my opinion), with little enclosed booths. They have pizza, pasta, and familiar Italian comfort food. Family-friendly, dependable, and easy to please a mixed group. They have great lunch specials and if I may recommend one thing on the menu - it’s the half and half salad! It seems weird but it’s delicious! :)

PowerStop
Powerstop is one of a kind. It’s literally in a gas station, so I’ll admit I didn’t try it for years even though people rave about the place. But once I did, I get it… it’s delicious. It’s greasy burgers, yummy wings… it is what it is and for what it is… it’s great. Ha! Really though, it is a fan favorite… don’t be deceived by the location like I was, give it a whirl if you’re lookin for a good, unassuming burger. A true local favorite for burgers and wings. Casual, fast, and unfussy.

5B’s BBQ
Well-loved BBQ with generous portions and a relaxed atmosphere. Try the Taternator! :) 5B’s is a great spot to order ahead and pick up to take home or, in the summer, there’s actually a little patio that pops out into the parking lot (I know, it doesn’t sound amazing but in the summer, any patio is a good patio in Gunnison! :) ) A solid choice when you’re hungry after a long day outside and want something filling.

Patcharee’s Kitchen (Takeout Favorite)
I hate to say, it took us far too long to discover Patcharee’s but once we did… it’s now one of our favorite spots in town. It’s no frills, mostly takeout (there are technically a few tables in there but it’s in a little natural grocery store so the vibe isn’t full on restaurant experience or anything.) The food is excellent, the portions are really generous and the prices are reasonable. Perfect for nights when you’d rather bring dinner back or want something flavorful without committing to a sit-down restaurant.

🍽️ Dinner in Gunnison

When you’re ready to slow down and enjoy a sit-down meal, these spots work well for relaxed evenings and special nights out.

Blackstock Bistro
One of Gunnison’s more refined dining options without feeling formal. Blackstock Bistro focuses on made-from-scratch dishes and thoughtful plates that suit a quieter, intentional dinner. Truth be told, our favorite night to go to Blackstock is Wednesdays because it’s Ramen Night! I know, it seems like an odd choice in Gunnison and in a non-asian restaurant but the ramen is really good and it’s a fun change from the typical American food you’ll find more commonly in town. A great choice for date nights or a slower evening.

Ol’ Miner Steakhouse
A classic steakhouse with a comfortable, welcoming feel. Expect hearty portions, familiar favorites, and an easygoing atmosphere. This is really your steak and potatoes type of place.

Garlic Mike’s Italian Cuisine
A well-known spot in the valley serving Italian classics in a warm, inviting environment. Works equally well for family dinners or a relaxed night out. In warmer months, the riverside setting adds to the experience but more on that in a minute!

1880 Tapas & Spirits
This is another spot that I hate to admit took us too long to actually discover but now that we have, it’s one of our favorite spots. It seems a little unassuming from the outside but once you step in it feels really fresh and inviting. It’s a cozy spot offering small plates meant for sharing. A great option for groups who enjoy ordering a variety of dishes and lingering over dinner.

🍺 Great Patios

Warm-weather dining is one of the highlights of summer in Gunnison. These spots offer outdoor seating that works especially well on long afternoons and relaxed evenings.

High Alpine Brewing Company
One of the most popular patio spots in town. High Alpine’s outdoor seating is an open upper deck, not ground level, which gives it an airy, slightly removed feel. They have salads, pizzas, that type of food, and lots and lots of beer. :)

The Dive
A casual patio that works well for lunch, drinks, or an easy dinner. Relaxed and social without feeling crowded. They’re “sister restaurants” with Mario’s and located right next door. They have garage doors that open up in the summer and make for a really lovely afternoon experience.

El Paraiso Family Mexican Restaurant
Known for its spacious patio, especially nice for groups and warm evenings. They’ve got great chips and salsa, which is always very important to me and they really mean business with those margaritas! :)

Pitas in Paradise
Pitas is another local favorite with great food, a decent bar and a non-assuming patio that’s nice to get a little vitamin D in as you chow down. It’s super low key and a great quick spot for a bite.

The Riverbar at Garlic Mike’s
Right on the river out behind Garlic Mike’s - the Riverbar is quintessential Gunni Summer Vibes with big flower baskets overflowing and the river flowing by right there, it’s just really lovely. They often have live music too which is a nice addition to the vibe. One of the best places in town to enjoy dinner or drinks outdoors during summer. Just remember it can get a little chilly as it gets dark when you’re down by the river so definitely bring a light jacket!

🍸 Cocktails & Drinks

Evenings in Gunnison tend to be low-key and unpretentious. These are good places to unwind after a day outside.

Sage Grouse Lounge
A local favorite for cocktails in a relaxed setting. A good choice if you want to sit, talk, and enjoy a well-made drink without a high-energy scene.

Crested Bucha
Known for kombucha, cocktails, and a social, welcoming atmosphere. Great for lighter drinks and non-alcoholic options as well.

The Whammy Bar
A casual bar with a distinctly local feel. Straightforward and unassuming. A good place to end the day with a drink and conversation.

Final Thoughts

Gunnison’s food scene isn’t about chasing trends. It’s about good, reliable places that fit the rhythm of the valley. Casual meals after long days outside, slower dinners when you have time to linger, and spots you’ll likely return to more than once during your stay.

Hours and offerings can change with the seasons, so flexibility goes a long way here. If you find a place you love, make a note and go back. Some of the best meals in Gunnison happen that way.
